Cupid’s Arrow 2.0

cupidAh, that wonderful time of year after college bowl games are over and before the sweet smell of spring fills the air: the month of February. February is a hangover month if ever there was one. Christmas and New Year’s are over, the last handful of people hanging on to their resolutions are giving up, it’s still cold, and you may feel sick.

However, the arrival of February does mean at least one thing: Valentine’s Day is here. Love is in the air, babies are being made, chalky candy hearts like the shelves, and singles are lining up for their Prozac prescriptions. But Valentine’s Day is a holiday that has evolved greatly over the years with developments in technology. Gone are the days when little Tommy would show up in first period arithmetic class with a Valentine for Suzie, only to find out she already has a pile of other Valentines on her desk. Today, Tommy would wake up, check Facebook, read Suzie’s status “omg what to do with all the valentines lol #somuchlove,” grimace, and then proceed to like Suzie’s status because it’s really the only socially acceptable way to deal with a status you actually hate.

Yes, when it comes to love there is now “an app for that.” Actually, there are quite a few apps designed to make your V-Day a little sweeter. For a short list of all-stars in this category, check out the Pro Flowers article posted on proflowers.com: you’ll be amazed what your smartphone can do for you and your baby.

But these apps presuppose you have a Valentine to wine and dine. Maybe you’re more like little Timmy and you need to pick your Valentine up off that pile, put on your suit and tie, and find someone who’s really into you so you can use UrbanSpoon to have dinner at the perfect restaurant or Magic Candle to set the mood.

But can technology help you actually find your Valentine? A new service claims to help you find those of your friends who may want… well, something more. In this brave new world, bangwithfriends.com helps those who aren’t so brave find friends who might enjoy their company on Valentine’s Day, or any day for that matter. Each user highlights Facebook friends they’d hook up with, and if there’s a match between users the site sends an email to both people. Ta-da! Valentine’s Day made.

Of course, there are lots of other less controversial apps that can help ensure Cupid’s arrow rings true. Maybe your problem isn’t finding a date; maybe it’s finding the right gift. According to proflowers.com, an app called El Gifto makes gift-giving a snap. By inputting a series of characteristics describing your sweetheart, the app generates a list of appropriate gifts. The best part? It’s free.

So this year, save the fear and desperation for a more appropriate date like April 15th and let technology make your February 14th a little easier.
